Two weather warnings for wind are set to come into place across Northern Ireland later today. The yellow warning issued by the Met Office will come into place 2pm on Friday, October 3, until 12pm Saturday, October 4.

The warning covers the entire region and follows a weather alert for rain across NI which was in force on Thursday.

A second amber weather warning will come into force on Friday at 3pm until 8pm, impacting counties Tyrone, Fermanagh, Down and Antrim.

The forecaster said: "Storm Amy is expected to bring a spell of strong winds to Northern Ireland later on Friday and into Friday night.

"South to southwesterly winds will increase during the afternoon, peaking during the evening with gusts of 50-60 mph in many areas, and potentially 60-70 mph in more exposed places, perhaps higher along parts of the north coast. Winds will slowly ease through Saturday.

"Strong winds will also be accompanied by spells of heavy rain, making for difficult driving conditions."

Regarding the amber alert, the Met Office said: "A period of damaging south to southwesterly winds are likely during the late afternoon and evening hours on Friday, with gusts of 60-70 mph inland and up to 80 mph along some more exposed coasts. Given this will coincide with the evening commute in many areas, this may lead to some disruption.

"Whilst winds may ease slightly later in the evening, it will likely remain windy overnight and into Saturday morning - this aspect is covered by a separate yellow warning."

And for the weather forecast for the next few days, the Met Office said: "Very windy early on Saturday with gale or severe gale force winds with rain or blustery showers.

"Winds easing on Sunday with further rain or showers continuing into Monday."
