Team Europe's Ryder Cup stars rack up huge bar bill during NY party
Europe's Ryder Cup team reportedly ran up a £230,000 bar bill as they partied into the night in New York after beating the United States at Bethpage Black
Team Europe are reported to have accumulated a staggering £230,000 bar tab whilst celebrating their Ryder Cup triumph.
The players, support staff and their families allegedly spent Sunday evening commemorating their success in New York.
They doused themselves in champagne on the Bethpage Black golf course as festivities commenced following their victory over the U.S. team, and apparently consumed considerably more as the night progressed.
Video footage of the group aboard the bus returning from Bethpage also revealed several players clutching drinks whilst chanting along to music blaring through the speakers, reports the Mirror.
Shane Lowry confessed on social media yesterday that "I might have a hangover." That provided a glimpse into how the evening unfolded.
The Sun now alleges they splashed out over £116,000 on 120 bottles of Moët and Chandon Brut Imperial champagne, costing £967 each. Another £74,000 is reported to have been spent on 60 bottles of Moët MCIII and an equal quantity of Moët Rose Champagne.
A further £18,000 allegedly went towards Belvedere Vodka, followed by more than £22,000 on ten bottles of limited-edition Hennessy 250th Anniversary cognac. Exclusively available to the players was a special Hennessy Richard Lunar New Year 2025 cognac, which sells for just under £15,000.
During their post-session press conference, the players debated who would lead in strokes gained, with a clear consensus emerging. "Sepp [Straka]," Tyrrell Hatton declared initially. "Sepp will stay undefeated."
The Austrian golfer then retorted: "I don't know, in Rome I was leaving for the airport and I still saw Tyrrell."
Lowry quickly clarified: "People will think it's me, but I'll be gone early." Hatton confirmed: "Sepp, hands down." Luke Donald chimed in, "We'll have some fun."
By this point, Rory McIlroy was pointing towards Justin Rose as Lowry shouted, "Rosey, Rosey." McIlroy added, "Dark horse in the back right!".
Reacting to this, Rose stood up from his seat and looked behind himself with a surprised expression, causing a wave of laughter. After sitting back down, the Ryder Cup veteran admitted: "I got a bit scared of myself after 2018."
Lowry made the decisive putt that clinched the Ryder Cup on Sunday. Discussing the abuse European players faced on the course, he confessed: "Yes, it was out of hand in the end over the week. Yesterday was pretty tame for me in the end, but two days with Rory, it is something we'll probably sit down and laugh about this week."
McIlroy endured constant heckling from the crowds, and his wife Erica even had a plastic beer cup thrown at her by a spectator. The Northern Irish golfer said: "[Families] should be off-limits, but obviously it wasn't this week," McIlroy stated. "Erica is fine. She's a very, very strong woman.
"You know, she handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has. I love her and we're going to have a good time celebrating tonight. I don't think we should ever accept that in golf," he said. "I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week.
"Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons. It teaches you etiquette. It teaches you how to play by the rules. It teaches you how to respect people. Sometimes this week we didn't see that. So no, this should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup."
Europe's delighted players wound up American president Donald Trump as the festivities got into full swing. The squad launched into a chorus of "Are you watching Donald Trump?" which McIlroy captured on his mobile phone in selfie mode.
"I'm glad he liked and enjoyed it," Europe captain Luke Donald revealed to the BBC following Trump's social media response stating: "Yes, I'm watching. Congratulations!".
Donald continued: "We were having a moment together with the team, and Rory got a text from the president. We read it out and thought [we'd have] a little bit banter [with him]. He seemed to take it in good spirits."
Additional celebration clips emerged from the team coach journey back to their accommodation from the venue, featuring the squad chanting "Europe's on fire, USA is terrified" to the melody of Gala's Freed From Desire.
