Police name man who died in Newry collision involving lorry

John O'Brien died after he was hit by a lorry in the Albert Basin area

Police have named the man who died after being hit by a lorry in Newry on Wednesday.

John O'Brien, 67, died following the collision in the Albert Basin area of Newry on October 8, shortly after 3.30pm, with police issuing an appeal for information as part of the investigation into his death.

Police have also reiterated an appeal to not share a distressing image from the scene that has been circulating online. The force has warned anyone found doing so could be prosecuted and are investigating who the originator of it is.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "The Police Service of Northern Ireland can confirm that a man who sadly died following a single vehicle road traffic collision in Newry on Wednesday, 8 th October, was 67-year-old John O’Brien.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with the police investigation, is asked to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 901 of 08/10/25.

"Police are aware of a distressing image being circulated from the scene of this road fatality and request that the sharing of this graphic scene image to cease immediately, out of consideration for the family impacted.

"Persons found to be sharing the image may be committing the offence of improper use of public electronic communications network. If anyone has information about the originator, or this image being disseminated, please contact Police on 101."
