Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom has revealed his family connections to Northern Ireland.

In an interview with Ryan Tubridy on Virgin Radio, the Pirates of the Caribbean star has shared that he is currently applying for an Irish passport.

Originally from Kent, the 48-year-old shared that his grandfather is from Northern Ireland and he hopes the passport will allow him to travel more freely across Europe for work.

He said: "I'm getting my Irish passport. [My grandfather] was actually from Northern Ireland."

Ryan Tubridy replied: "And there’s a lot of people from the UK who, after a certain political move, found themselves looking for a granny down the back of the couch."

In his latest film, The Cut, Bloom plays an Irish boxer determined to win a championship title after coming out of retirement.

He laughed in response to Tubridy's joke and added that he was proud of his roots across the water.

He said: "Part of it was actually just for work, like, when I was working in Prague for a while, [there was] a whole bunch of new paperwork.
