Police have confirmed a pedestrian has died after being struck by a lorry in Newry. Shortly after 3.30pm on Wednesday, October 8, police received a report of a male pedestrian having been struck by a lorry in the Albert Basin area. Emergency services attended but the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have shared an appeal for information, and have warned against sharing a distressing image from the scene, adding that those who do may be committing an offence.

Inspector Cherith Adair of the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Collision Investigation Unit said: “Shortly after 3.30pm, we received a report of a male pedestrian having been struck by a lorry in the Albert Basin area of the city.

“Our officers attended alongside emergency service partners, however the man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

"The area, which was closed for a period of time as we conducted a forensic examination, has now re-opened.

“Our enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 901 08/10/25.”

Police are aware of a distressing image being circulated from the scene of this road fatality. We request the sharing of this graphic scene image to cease immediately out of consideration for the family impacted.

Persons found to be sharing the image may be committing the offence of improper use of public electronic communications network. If anyone has information about the originator, or this image being disseminated, please contact Police on 101.

Additional road closures to remain in place for a number of hours

In an update, a PSNI spokesperson said: "The Albert Basin area in Newry will remain closed for a number of hours due to a serious collision.

"The closure extends to Bridge Street from Dominic Street, Williams Street from Kilmorey Street and Buttercrane Quay. Traffic is building, please avoid the area and seek alternate routes for your journey.


"Update to follow in due course."

Councillor asks public to stop sharing images of the incident

Alliance councillor Helena Young has asked the public to stop sharing photos from the incident.

Posting on Facebook, she said: "I'm very sorry to hear that there has been a very tragic accident in the vicinity of the Albert Basin, Newry, this afternoon.

"Roads are closed and will most likely remain closed for the rest of the evening.

"I understand there are photos being shared of this tragedy, and I would appeal to people not to share these photos.

"A family will receive the most devastating news today; let's all show some respect."

One person taken to hospital say Ambulance Service

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 15:44 on Wednesday 8 th October, following reports of an RTC in the Bridge Street Area, Newry.

"NIAS dispatched 1 Emergency Ambulance to the scene.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at scene, one patient has been taken to the Daisyhill Hospital by Ambulance."
