Lower Shankill housing development linking back to area’s industrial history
Local representatives welcomed the move for further housing and regeneration
A new housing development is hoping to breathe new life into the Shankill area while linking back to the area's industrial history.
The development in the lower Shankill Road area is known as Soho Foundry, named after a site that operated at the height of Belfast's industrial growth, when the city was expanding rapidly and became known as "Boomtown Belfast."
The area around Townsend Street was a thriving hub of mills and workshops, making it a heart of Belfast's industrial activity. Now, local home builder, Bluehouse Developments, has developed a series of brand-new one and two bedroom apartments on the site.
Bluehouse Developments say they have engaged with key stakeholders, local community representatives, and residents, and have "invested in the transformation of this area." They described Soho Foundry Housing Development as a "vibrant, sustainable, and attractive space."
DUP MLA Phillip Brett told Belfast Live: “For too long this part of our city has been blighted by dereliction and underinvestment. Projects like Soho Foundry show what can be achieved when regeneration is prioritised and quality homes are delivered for local families.
"I want to pay tribute to my colleagues, community representatives and to Bluehouse Developments for their commitment to ensuring the Lower Shankill is no longer left behind, but benefits from the investment, housing and opportunities it deserves.”
Cllr Ian McLaughlin added that he welcomes the new development, saying "this exciting project breathes new life into an area left derelict and underused due to years of under investment in our community."
Jimmy Neeson from Bluehouse Developments said: “Phase 1 is now completed and we are delighted to offer term time rental accommodation to a number of international students from Queens University. Phase 2 of these brand-new affordable 1 & 2 bedroom turnkey apartments has launched and units are available for sale and to rent.”
