Katie Taylor's British rival crowned world champion after Irish legend fails to comply with negotiations

She defended her undisputed title against Taylor in May 2023, but was defeated by the Bray woman six months later at the 3Arena

Chantelle Cameron has been declared the new WBC super-lightweight champion following Katie Taylor's decision to step down from the title. Taylor, the former undisputed champion who held all the titles at super-lightweight, was instructed to enter into negotiations with mandatory challenger Cameron. Despite being granted a three-week extension to the deadline, she failed to comply and consequently lost her title.

It was initially anticipated that Cameron's forthcoming match with Sandy Ryan would be for the vacant belt. However, it now seems that Cameron will be making her first defence of the title against fellow British fighter Ryan.

This marks Chantelle Cameron's second stint as WBC super-lightweight (light-welterweight) champion. She first claimed the title in 2020, becoming undisputed in the weight class.

She defended her undisputed title against Taylor in May 2023, but was defeated by the Bray woman six months later at the 3Arena, reports the Irish Mirror.

Since their winter 2023 bout, Cameron has been advocating for a rematch with Taylor, but Taylor chose to rematch Amanda Serrano, defeating her twice to conclude the trilogy 3-0.

While Cameron has been crowned champion, Taylor has been designated 'champion in recess' by the WBC, essentially placing her at the front of the queue for a shot at the title upon her return.

The future of Taylor's boxing career remains uncertain. Many had anticipated her retirement following her third fight with Serrano, but the 2012 Olympic champion refrained from making any public declaration at that time.

Just last week, after failing to meet the negotiation deadline with Cameron, newly-married Taylor gave up the title and declared she was focusing on personal matters.
