Dublin-Derry airlink to commence in 2026, says Irish Government

The commencement of a new "Dublin-Derry airlink" in 2026 was among the budgetary measures announced by the Irish Government on Tuesday.
The Government said this would enable regular air travel between the Republic of Ireland's capital and Derry.
Announcing Budget 2026 in the Dail, Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers said the Government was "committed to supporting vibrant, inclusive and sustainable communities throughout Ireland".
He said it would double resources for its "Shared Island initiative", involving a further billion euro out to 2035.
Mr Chambers said 2026 will see progress on the Narrow Water Bridge and Ulster Canal restoration projects, and further programmes on tourism, bioeconomy and research.
Speaking to the PA news agency about the airlink, the former transport minister said: "It was a big ask from the people of Derry and across the northwest region as well.
"A lot of people in Donegal and the whole cross-border business community have been seeking to pursue this route for many years.
"I think it is a really important measure to drive connectivity between Dublin and Derry. North-South connectivity is critical from an aviation perspective for onward journeys as well and so, you know, I think it'll make a real difference."
The move was welcomed as "hugely positive for the entire northwest" by Sinn Fein.
Party MLA Padraig Delargy said: "City of Derry Airport has a huge role to play in our local economy, helping to connect communities and businesses across these islands.
"Sinn Fein in the Executive has been working to support the airport, and this additional service funded by the Irish Government will provide yet another boost. I'll continue working with ministers and the other parties to unlock our region's potential and drive its positive transformation."
