Every parent wants their child to be happy, confident and inspired to learn.

At Sullivan Upper Preparatory Department, nestled in the heart of Holywood, County Down, children grow into curious, kind and resilient learners.

With the warmth of a small, nurturing school and the opportunities of a larger academic institution, Sullivan Prep offers the benefits of both.

Small classes, big opportunities

With just one class per year group, Sullivan Prep is a close-knit community where every child is truly known and valued. Teachers take time to understand each pupil’s needs and strengths, helping them achieve their best.

Many pupils continue seamlessly into Sullivan Upper School, carrying forward friendships, confidence and a strong sense of belonging. The school also has a proud record of academic success – the majority of pupils who sit the transfer test secure a grammar school place.

In the final years of prep, tailored SEAG support, including one-to-one tutorials and transition programmes, ensures children feel fully prepared for the next stage of their education.

Learning that inspires

Surrounded by woodland, pupils are encouraged to explore the outdoors, develop independence and build an appreciation of the natural world.

Languages form a key part of the curriculum, with Spanish taught from Year 1 to Year 6, and French introduced in P7 to provide a broad foundation before senior school.

Sport and the arts are also central to life at Sullivan Prep.

From Prep 1, pupils enjoy PE and Games led by a full-time specialist teacher, plus swimming lessons at the local pool. Music and drama thrive too, with performances at harvest, Christmas and school productions bringing the community together.

Blending tradition and innovation

Sullivan Prep believes in nurturing potential, not pressuring it.

By creating what staff describe as a “greenhouse environment,” children are supported to grow at their own pace, in a school that balances strong traditions with a modern, vibrant outlook.

A message from the headteacher

“At Sullivan Prep, we believe childhood should be a time of curiosity, discovery and joy.

“Our small, nurturing classes allow every pupil to be truly known and supported, while our connection to the wider school ensures they benefit from exceptional opportunities.
