Belfast boxing star's emotional tribute to late cousin after big win
Caoimhin Agyarko beat Ishmael Davis via split decision on Saturday night, with the fight taking place on the anniversary of his cousin's death
Belfast boxing sensation Caoimhin Agyarko delivered a heartfelt tribute to his late cousin following his victory on the anniversary of his passing.
Gifted fighter Agyarko secured victory over Ishmael Davis by split decision on Saturday. September 13 also marks the anniversary of his cousin's death.
Agyarko turned to social media to reveal how September 13 holds deep significance in his heart as he honoured his cousin John. He said: "September 13th will always be a special day for me but unfortunately not always for the good times, 11 years ago I fought for Ireland against Germany in Belfast and on the same night my big cousin passed away, he told me he was coming to the fight he should've been there but he changed his plans and god had different plans for him," reports the Irish Mirror.
"Saturday was an emotional night for me, fighting in the biggest fight of my career on his anniversary. I hope I've done you proud, John. I miss you so much, big man ".
Having been raised in Belfast, Agyarko has forged an outstanding professional career for himself. His latest triumph extended his record to 18-0, as he continues pursuing his dream of becoming a world champion.
The victory means he successfully defended his WBA Continental super welterweight title and will now be setting his sights on additional belts in the future.
Agyarko had his throat slashed on a Belfast city centre street back in 2017. The then 20-year-old's injuries were so severe that he required emergency surgery to have multiple stitches inserted into a horrific wound down the side of his face.
To date nobody has been brought to justice for the attack. There were fears the stabbing could have ended his burgeoning boxing career, but Agyarko turned professional just one year later.
The past weekend was packed with thrilling Irish boxing matches, including Lewis Crocker's victory over Paddy Donovan in their rematch, and Tyrone McKenna's win against Dylan Moran.
