Ballymena newsagent puts cherished business up for sale after 45 years
Eugene Diamond has put his beloved business up for sale due to health reasons
A popular Co Antrim newsagents has gone for sale after its owner recently announced his retirement following health concerns.
Eugene Diamond's independent newsagents Diamonds News on Broughshane Street has been keeping the people of Ballymena and beyond up to date with the latest news for decades.
Mr Diamond is famous for posting images of the front and back pages of newspapers on social media every day of the week and opens the doors of his shop, located on one of the main routes into and out of the town, at 5.30am daily.
In addition to posting the daily newspaper headlines, he was also known for his lively over the counter banter and sharing early morning pictures of Broughshane Street alongside a weather update.
But back in June, Eugene revealed that ill-health was forcing him to put his beloved Co Antrim business up for sale and bow out after 45 "great years". It marks the end of an era for one of the last of the old school sweet shop owners left in Northern Ireland who has ensured locals are chomping on the latest chocolate, sweets and of course, news.
He said: "Due to ongoing health problems I’m going to put my business including building up for sale. It’s sad to make this decision but since March I have had to step back from working my usual hours. I’ve had 45 great years here on Broughshane Street but all things come to an end. Eugene."
Speaking to Belfast Live at the time, Eugene said the decision to step away from the business has not been an easy one: "It's been a hard decision but due to ongoing health issues, I'm selling the shop after 45 years.
"I'll be 68 this year but I've never acted my age and I think the shop kept me young. My daughter got me into doing the Facebook and Twitter and it's been a big part of the business.
"My family wanted me to do the right thing but it's not a job you can do in my current state of health. I'll carry on until we sell up as I have staff that work for me who have been with me long-term. It would be nice if someone took it over. With Primark opening up beside me soon. that will be a massive asset to that area "
The well-known Ballymena newsagent "with deep roots and loyal customers" and a "heart of the community" has now been listed for sale by Rafferty Property Services with a £225,000 price tag.
A spokesperson added: "The lovingly tended business is now available as the current owner retires due to health reasons. It’s a complete, turnkey opportunity brimming with goodwill and community ties.
