'A beautiful lady and teacher': Tributes to grandmother who died in Co Antrim crash

She died at the scene while three other people were taken to hospital

Warm tributes have been paid to a beloved teacher who died following a two vehicle crash in Co Antrim at the weekend.

Beatrice Higgins (née Black), who was aged in her 80s and from Ballycastle, died following the two-vehicle road traffic collision in the Killagan Road area of Glarryford on Sunday afternoon, September 28.

Mrs Higgins died at the scene while three other people were taken to hospital for treatment to injuries.

A funeral notice described her as the beloved wife of the late Dan; loving mother of Leona (McKiernan), Shauna (O’Neill), Bronagh (Quinn), Edmund, James and Danielle (O’Neill); dear mother-in-law of Pat, Damian, James, Laura and Bryan and a much-adored Nana of Aoibh, Eimear, Eoghan, Feargal, Conn, Aoibhinn, Eleanor, Dan, Eliza, Bronagh, Orlaith and Meabh.

She was a daughter of the late Edmund and Eileen Black and dear sister of the late Fr. Julian, Edmund and Nuala (Doherty).

Funeral from her late residence, 20 Moyle Park, on Friday, October 3 at 9:20am for 10 o’clock Requiem Mass in St. Patrick’s & St. Brigid’s Church, Ballycastle. Interment afterwards in adjoining cemetery.

Many glowing tributes have been paid to Mrs Higgins since news of her sudden death emerged.

One person said: "Sincere condolences to all the family Mrs Higgins was one of the best, fond memories from St Anne’s."

Another added: "Sincere condolences to all the family. Beatrice was a lady and she was a wonderful teacher, loved by all. Very fond memories when she taught in St. Anne's. Rest in peace."

"Devastated to hear this sad news. Beatrice was a lovely lady and a great teacher in St Olcan's PS in Armoy. May she rest in peace," said a third.

A fourth added: "Deepest heartfelt sympathy to the entire family. A beautiful lady and teacher. RIP Beatrice."

Another said: "Such sad news, sincere condolences to all the family. Lovely memories of Mrs Higgins in St Patrick’s."

In a statement, Inspector Cherith Adair of the PSNI's Collision Investigation Unit said: “Our enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have dashcam footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 750 28/09/25."
